Intelligent Commentary On 21st Century Poetics
New Zealand’s New Poet Laureate
9 December 2007, the poet @ 7:48 pm

I’d like to move to New Zealand. If for any reason, because I’d like to be the poet laureate. They make $75,000. I mean, that’s a full-time job.

Evidently, Michele Leggott is one hot poet. She calls herself the ‘poetry PR chick.’ How humble. And I like the fact that you get a full-time appointment to write and promote poetry, get paid handsomely well (by my calculations, $75,000 amounts to $58,462 USD and the average income in New Zealand is about $27,000 equivalent U.S. dollars), and still get to keep your day job. Congratulations to Michele Leggott in New Zealand for her appointment to the 18-month poet laureate position. Too bad we don’t value our poets that highly in the good ole U.S.A.
